Had a wonderful time at the Greek Festival in Monterey Bay, California

Greek dancing, greek food, gorgeous setting

If you haven't gone - do!  If not this year - next year.

Just returned from a wonderful tour of France and Italy with my co-author and husband, Doug.

Revisited the scene of the crime (Chapter 3 of CBW)

I wonder how many detective readers guessed the identities of the characters before "all was revealed."

Ah, the devilish delights of a mystery writer.

Random Acts of Kindness

Yesterday, I heard a blurb on the radio about the health benefits to those who perform random acts of kindness

Striking to me because moments before I pulled my car over to help a woman huddled on the curb in distress

Let's start a movement!

Perform an act of kindness for a total stranger (no monetary donation involved.)  Be creative and spontaneous.

Send me your story (reneehikes@aol.com.)  Pass the baton to your friends.

See the page devoted to the most intriguing RAOK's I receive from all of you.

Game?

Tragedy in Japan

Visit my blog - ReneeLouiseJohnson.com

Tsunamis cause the most damage and are responsible for the greatest number of fatalities

How did the Minoans, a Bronze-Age civilization, deal with a far greater cataclysm?

What did the before and after look like 3,500 years ago?

My prayers go to Japan and all affected areas

Starfish Under Seige

Looters destroyed two mummies and smashed artefacts from the Cairo Museum

Looking for gold, they dropped the figures after discovering they did not contain gold

The gold granulated starfish featured in "Cataclysm in Blue Water" resides in the Cairo Museum.

To my knowledge, the starfish remains safe.

I would be heartbroken to learn of its theft along with the vast majority of Egyptians.

At one point, a line of good-hearted citizens locked arms to protect the museum.

Iceland Rocks

As dramatic as the volcanic ash causing disruption to Europe has been -

In the annals of history, it is not a huge event

Two major plates are drifting apart in Iceland (Eurasian and North American) creating a dramatic rift valley

Iceland is moving over a hot spot with 100 volcanoes on hand to accomodate the lava

This country is geologically fascinating!

"The Barbary Pirates" by William Dietrich

Coming out in April 2010, Harper

Excerpt:  "Curvier was also intrigued by my mention of the word "Thira,"

which I'd read on medieval gold foil unearthed during my North American adventure."

Minoan and Santorini enthusiasts should enjoy this novel after reading "Cataclysm in Blue Water"

Will it ever reopen?

On 09-23-2005, the expensive and newly-remodeled roof structure protecting the archological site collapsed.

One death and six injured tourists in the ruins of Akrotiri struck a real-life Greek tragedy.

Pending funding in the ruinous Greek economy, and a new roof design, Akrotiri remains closed.

Will we ever know the extent of this Minoan village in Santorini?

Will we ever see the Bronze-Age treasures yet hidden within volcanic ash?

Will we ever have greater insight as to the fate of the indigenous population?

Will we ever dig our feet into ash and feast our eyes on cracked staircases and amazing ancient plumbing?

A reader's review - Barbara of Santa Barbara, California writes:

"Just finished your book.  It is incredible!!   Excellent writing, research and story.  A must read.  Congratulations!

The end is fascinating.  I remained connected to the characters, wondering what happened next.

It is an ideal mix of captivating writing, mystery and history.  Will there be more?"

Fun factoids for my reader:

In developing my modern-day heroine, Krista, I held a mental image of Kristen Bell.

Krista's mother, Cynthia?  Candice Bergen came to mind.

I received this e-mail from a reader today:

"I spent the past week visiting my mom, and was able to read your book.  As I was reading, I kept thinking, there is no way she is going to be able to tie this complicated story line together, and YOU DID IT!!  With the help of your character Jonathan, there has to be a sequel somewhere in the back of your mind.  Your book was not only a page turner, but an education."

Following the news and updates from Samoa and Indonesia, the author cannot help but reflect on the subject matter of Cataclysm in Blue Water, and draw a comparison.  Earthquakes and the eruption did not wipe out an entire civilization, the tsunamis did.  Think of a Bronze-Age civilization, the Minoans, coping with devastating walls of water that make the current disaster pale in comparison.
